Method of Instruction: The asynchronous learning system will provide students with the convenience of accessing the course at a time and place convenient to them. It also allows the instructor and students to have more interaction, accessibility in a collaborative learning environment.  

Course Description: This course is designed to help students examine illicit drug use, abuse, and addiction in the United States from the medical and sociological perspectives. The course provides students with background information for understanding the current state of illicit drug use and the prevalence of drug abuse. In addition, students examine the different types of drugs abused by the public, the criminal connection to illicit drugs, and the application of laws and therapies to curb illicit use.

 Performance Objectives:

  • Describe the signs of drug-taking behavior including, use, misuse, and abuse and apply different approaches to treatment.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with the laws regulating the use of illicit drugs and the clinical management of drug abuse.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of drug action and its behavioral and physiological effects.
  • Apply cultural competence in conjunction with psychological principles when dealing with personal, social or organizational issues.
  • Engage in critical thinking to solve problems related to behavior and mental processes.
  • Analyze the motivational variables that contribute to drug-seeking behavior to assess and treat clients.
  • Apply knowledge about the role played by psychoactive drugs in treating different diseases and conditions that affect the brain in careers in the healthcare field.
  • Explain how psychoactive drugs affect the brain using jargon-free language.
  • Apply research methods to analyze how drug abuse affects the brain.
  • Demonstrate ethical practice that upholds the underpinnings of the science of psychology.

 

Grade Determination: All tests and assigned projects are graded against a 100% system. Discussion grades are averaged and account for 30% of the final grade. Written assignment grades are averaged and account for 40% of the final grade. Quiz and exam grades are averaged and account for 30% of the final grade. All course assignments and calculated final grades are graded against a 100% system which is assigned a letter grade and a grade point average according to this chart.

Requirements for successful completion: In order to receive credit for this course, the student must earn a minimum of 60%.

Outside Preparation/Required Homework: 

Total required outside work required – 90 hours. The hours applied to each assignment were determined based on standard formulas to include (if applicable) reading with comprehension, outline completion, minutes/question, minutes/case study or critical thinking question; minutes/code determination and reports to include research, rough draft and final draft.
